French Onions

onionsDo you remember the French onion sellers? I can remember seeing them as a child when we lived in Finchley, North London. They were always on bicycles, wearing the traditional French beret, and loaded up with hundreds of onions - apparently, up to hundred kilos or more than 200 lbs! Now it seems, these onion 'Johnnies' are a dying breed.

My mother, who was French, would always buy a string of onions - each onion neatly tied to the one above. They would hang up in the larder and would keep for ages. Maybe the secret was that the long stems were intact and tied, but they certainly kept much longer than supermarket produce does today. They were large and very tasty onions, too. Of course, when we moved to the south coast, that was the last we saw of the onion sellers. My Dad grew his own from then on.

I love fried onions! I can smell them now!

This reminds me of something I haven't eaten since I was a kid...a fried onion sandwich; a big onion sliced into pieces the width of the onion and about an inch thick fried in butter and sandwiched between slices of whole wheat toast. My father swore that an onion sandwich was the cure for a sore throat.

I'm sure your father was right. Also, onions are full of anti-oxidants and we should all eat lots more of them.

Mmmmm! Fried onion sandwich! Sometimes, I get soft oblong bread rolls and stuff them with ultra-thin slices of Scottish beef, (courtesy Marks and Spencer), on a thin spreading of butter and soft cream cheese topped with loads of fried onions!   When I was working in an office, I often used to get cheese and onion sandwiches for lunch with raw onion. Lovely! Haven't had one of those for a long time.
